The Ashes series begins today in England. The first match is being held at Cardiff. Seeing a photo of The English captain, Andrew Strauss holding the Ashes urn got me into thinking, is this the trophy that Australia and England fight for every few years??? 'coz it was so small!

So, did a bit of searching and found some interesting facts. It so happened that after England were defeated by Australia in a Test match in 1882, the tabloids had dubbed it as the "Death of English cricket" and that the "body will be cremated and taken to Australia".

During the subsequent tour of England to Australia in 1882, a group of women from Victoria presented the then captain, Ivo Bligh, with an urn containing ashes (possibly of a bail), which the English captain had come to "retrieve". Thus came the series.
